Integrative and Compassionate
My approach to therapy sessions is rooted in nonjudgment and compassion, also known as unconditional positive regard. I view problematic behaviors, negative thoughts, trauma wounds and grief as doorways into the human psyche, where-upon entry-the healing process and restructuring work can take place.
In sessions, I will be listening very closely to what is and is not said. I meet each client where they are, gauging first what is needed in terms of a safe container for the work, meaning total attunement is given to the client’s vulnerabilities, sensitivities and defenses. Together we will intuit-and discuss-to what depth and into what terrain it is safe to go. My offerings are integrative, meaning I will utilize different treatment modalities at different junctures, depending on what the emotional and psychological landscape calls for. Generally speaking, my work is considered insight oriented.
Work with me tends to involve exploring both the light and the shadow within the client and their challenging situation or history. All too often people can exile certain parts of themselves, which lends to a fractured and potentially maladaptice psyche. There might be disturbances in relationships or lack of life satisfaction as a result. When we do go into the darker parts of the client’s experience, it is with the intention of shedding light on what really needs our attention and nurturance. We will get to the root of core beliefs about self, which are usually what drive behavior patterns. The idea here is to shift the internal cogs so that each client can move forth as a wholely integrated individual, free to lead authentic and fulfilling lives. My approach is strength based and ego supportive. I’m interested in helping people expand and grow into their potential.
At times, our work together might examine intergenerational influences and matters of spirituality. For those who are interested, I help explore meaning making and purpose. This tends to come up often when I’m working with clients in grief.
I am a Compassionate Inquiry practioner, having undergone advanced trauma training with Dr. Gabor Mate. He is among my professional influences, as is Dr. Dick Schwartz and his Internal Family Systems work.
The success of therapy depends, in large part, on the rapport between client and clinician. Please feel free to book a free 20 minute consultation to see if we might be a good fit for work together.
